Killed In Action Trying To Save Buddy On Peleliu

--------------------------

Last October 1, First Lieutenant Hoagland Lapham of Hackensack was personally directing an attack against an enemy-held cave on Peleliu when his detachment was counterattacked by a superior force of the enemy and subjected to short range machinegun fire.

DEFIED ENEMY FIRE

Lieutenant Lapham after directing his men to take cover, advanced in the face of heavy enemy fire in order to evacuate a wounded soldier. Before he could accomplish his mission he was mortally wounded.

For gallantry in action Lieutenant Lapham, son of Mrs. Elsa H. Lapham, 97 Pine Street, Hackensack, has been posthumously awarded the Silver Star.

Mrs. Lapham was presented with her son's Silver Star by Colonel George S. Beurket, commanding officer at Fort Jay, N.Y., at ceremonies there Friday.
